Tales of the Cocktail and W New Orleans invite movie buffs and libation lovers to indulge in celebrating the cocktail with three films.

Cheryl Charming aka Miss Charming™, cocktail author and founder of MissCharming.com, plays hostess for the silver screenings.Miss Charming™ has been in the food and beverage industry since 1976: tending bar, authoring cocktail related books (9 so far), teaching bar tricks to Walt Disney World bartenders, and cocktail consulting. Currently residing in Downtown Orlando, Miss Charming™ is a member of The Bartenders Guild, The Museum of the American Cocktail and maintains the website www.MissCharming.com.

Chef Roberto Bustillo, Jr. of Zoë Restaurant will prepare inspired hors d’oeuvres for the day. Chef Bustillo has won two Gold Fleur de Lis Awards from New Orleans Wine and Food Experience in 2006 and 2007 and a Silver Fleur de Lis Award in 2008. Zoë Restaurant and Lounge is located on the second floor of the W New Orleans.

The Ogden invites you to our 5th Anniversary After Hours Celebration with Lionel Ferbos and the Louisiana Shakers.

Ever since he earned his first professional job in the late 1920s with the Starlight Serenaders native New Orleanian Lionel Ferbos has been consistently active in the New Orleans music community. In his early years, he played with acts such as Captain John Handy's Louisiana Shakers and pianist Walter Chapon's band. During the Depression, Ferbos played in the WPA band, which was comprised of stellar musicians such as Willie Humphrey. Subsequent stints with Herb Leary's Society Syncopaters and the Mighty Four followed, but his 1970 induction into Lars Edegran's New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra has proved to be Ferbos' most enduring association. In recognition of his distinguished career that spans almost a century, Ferbos was honored with the Music Heritage Award at the 16th Annual Big Easy Entertainment Awards. Ferbos will be celebrating his 97th birthday this year, making him the oldest living jazz musician in New Orleans.

Mark Miller is a New Orleans area based country music artist and songwriter splitting his time between networking and songwriting in Nashville, and his beloved and restored home in Covington, LA. Currently in the midst of recording his first solo release, Mark has melded his two music cities in every aspect. While recording the music “beds” in famous Nashville studios, Mark has insisted on recording his vocal performances at home in New Orleans, just a few feet from the Mississippi River, at The Music Shed, the city’s leading cutting edge and locally owned recording studio - every note of Mark’s soulful vocals being recorded in the embrace of his delta swamp roots.

Jim McCormick was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and still has strong ties to his home, where he returns often for inspiration. He is currently a staff songwriter for Warner Chappell Music in Nashville. Recently he enjoyed his first top 40 hit single, “We Rode in Trucks,” with Luke Bryan. His songs also have been recorded by Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Randy Travis, Trace Adkins, Ronnie Milsap, Blue County, Bobby Pinson, Jeff Bates, Laren Lucas, Anders Osborne, Amanda Shaw and many others. He has performed at clubs and festivals throughout the USA, including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Key West Songwriters Festival, and the South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX.

Roberts Batson’s popular one-man show that ran for the three years at the True Brew Theatre was televised and earned Batson a 2007 regional Emmy nomination.

This new mounting honors the Sazerac, which the Louisiana state legislature recently proclaimed “The Official Cocktail of the City of New Orleans.” Batson always begins his show with this story.

The two-hour presentation provides Batson’s unique take on New Orleans culture. The first act provides an overview of early New Orleans history that explains “how we got to be this way.” Act two focuses on the rich diversity of cultures that interacted here. The multimedia presentation examines the cardinal elements of New Orleans culture: religion, race, music, politics and food. His comment on alcohol: “Many New Orleanians think a twelve-step program is two six packs of Dixie Beer.”

Batson is an accomplished actor, tour guide and award-winning writer of over 300 articles on Louisiana history and culture. The show draws on his forty years’ experience as performer professor, pundit, and political operative.

Big Sam`s Funky Nation @ Blue Nile

Presiding over his Funky Nation is Big Sam, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk. Theirs, and Big Sam's, exuberant dancing and playing, afford them a rare opportunity to let loose. Big Sam's Funky Nation has undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops.

JPAS 31st Season Adult Auditions Announced

Auditions for the Jefferson Performing Arts Society’s 31st Season will be on Saturday, June 21st, from 10am-6pm, Tuesday, June 24th, from 6pm-10pm and Wednesday, June 25th, from 6pm-10pm. All auditions will be held at the Westwego Performing Arts Theatre, 177 Sala Avenue in Westwego. Auditions are by appointment only. Please call 885.2000 ext. 211 to set up a five-minute audition slot. When scheduling your audition, please indicate whether you will be performing song/monologue or monologue only.

Please prepare two contrasting songs and a monologue, OR two contrasting monologues; total not to exceed four minutes. Please provide sheet music in the key you wish to sing it. Accompanist will be provided, but will not transpose. You may be asked to read from sides that will be provided.

All roles are open unless otherwise indicated. All roles are paid. Rehearsal dates are subject to change. Please bring headshot and resume. If you do not have a headshot, please bring a current photo.

Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are strongly encouraged to attend.
Please note that auditions for children for Miracle on 34th Street and The Best Little Christmas Pageant Ever will be held on July 12th by appointment only. Audition material for The Best Little Christmas Pageant will be available for pick-up starting June 18th.

Auditions for THE HISTORY BOYS

Auditions for FourFront Theatre’s upcoming production of The History Boys, by Alan Bennett, will be held on June 8th at 6pm in Tulane University’s McWilliams Hall. Needed are 8 males with a youthful look and a convincing British accent to play the boys, specifically one African American and one of Middle Eastern descent. The adult roles will be cast at a later date. Director Fred Nuccio is asking for a short prepared monologue as well as a reading from either WH Auden, AE Houseman, Thomas Hardy or Stevie Smith. A headshot and resume is requested. Actors will receive a small compensation. The History Boys will run Oct 17 – 26 at Southern Rep. Theater as part of Southern Rep’s City Series. NOMA to Stay Open All Night June 7-June 8

The New Orleans Museum of Art will remain open all night long from Saturday, June 7 to Sunday, June 8, to mark the closing of its current blockbuster exhibition, Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina.

Special events will be ongoing during the 24-hour period beginning Saturday, June 7 at 5 p.m. and continuing through the end of the exhibition's run on Sunday, June 8 at 5 p.m. The lineup of events is highlighted by live music and Cajun dancing with Lafourche (Saturday, 5 p.m.); more music by an artist to be announced (Saturday, 9 p.m.); late-night dance music with DJ Beverly Skillz (Sunday, midnight to 3 a.m.); book signings with the famed Blue Dog artist George Rodrigue (Sunday, 1 and 3 p.m.); a cooking demonstration with Rodrigue's old friend, Chef Paul Prudhomme (Sunday, 2 p.m.); an appearance by another longtime Rodrigue friend, jazz legend Pete Fountain (Sunday afternoon); and live Dixieland jazz from the New Orleans Jazz Club (Sunday, 2 p.m.).

A cash bar will be open during the live music and DJ on Saturday night, and special "Blue Dog" daiquiris will be available all Sunday afternoon.

Other events on tap include complimentary Sunday morning coffee and donuts (Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon); screenings of a Rodrigue documentary in the Stern Auditorium (all day Sunday); appearances by New Orleans Zephyrs mascot Boudreaux, New Orleans Saints mascot Gumbo and the Saintsations, and New Orleans Voodoo mascots Mojo and Bones (Sunday, 1-3 p.m.); free snowballs for kids (Sunday, 1-5 p.m.), and a drawing to win a signed, personalized Rodrigue print.

Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina, as well as NOMA's other current exhibitions and permanent collection works on view, will remain open for a total of 31 consecutive hours, from the time the Museum opens on Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m., until Sunday, June 8 at 5 p.m.

Louisiana residents receive discounted Museum admission during Rodrigue's Louisiana: Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina--$5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for children under 18.

Other special exhibitions currently on view include New Orleans: A Sense of Place, organized by the Historic New Orleans Collection, tracing more than 150 years of the city's history from 1850 on; Gentlemen Callers: Paul Cadmus and George Dureau from the Collection of Kenneth Holditch; and Dog Show, a light-hearted look at images of canines from the Museum's permanent collection, also closing June 8.

Chef Brian Landry of Galatoire’s Is King of Louisiana Seafood

Saturday’s premiere of the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off, presented by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board (LSPMB), was a seafood lover’s dream. Twelve of the state’s most talented chefs designed culinary delights featuring the main ingredient, Louisiana seafood. After the judges’ scores were tallied, Chef Brian Landry assisted by Chef Heather Young of Galatoire’s in New Orleans and Baton Rouge were the winning team with their Sautéed Cobia with Louisiana Crab Butter. Second place was Chef Phil O’Donnell of O’ Donnell’s Restaurant in Ponchatoula with his Mojo Gulf Shrimp and Panko Crusted Louisiana Crab Cake. Third place was Chef Brian Smith assisted by Chef Eric Mark of Randol’s Restaurant in Lafayette with their Kocho Crusted Louisiana Gulf Grouper.

“I took a very simple approach,” said Landry. “When you get access to great seafood like we do, you don’t have to do much to make it delicious.”

Sautéed Cobia with Louisiana Crab Butter by Chef Brian Landry of Galatoire’s Restaurant

Sautéed Cobia
8 each Cobia, 6-7 oz portions (Also try Lemon Fish or Pompano with this recipe)
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups clarified butter
Salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Season fish with salt and pepper, and dust with flour. Cover the bottom of a large sauté pan with clarified butter and set over medium-high heat. Sauté for four to five minutes per side, until golden brown crust is formed.

Louisiana Crab Butter
5 each Louisiana whole gumbo crabs
2 lb. plugra unsalted butter (European style)
½ tsp paprika
1/8 tsp white pepper or dash of cayenne
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp turmeric

Place gumbo crabs in an 8 qt. (non-reactive) sauce pot. With a food mallet or potato masher, break up shells as well as possible. Add the butter and seasoning to the saucepot and place on a very low flame or burner. Allow shells to barely simmer or stew in the butter for 30-40 minutes. Continue during this cooking time, to crush shells more, to release all crab flavor. Turn off heat; allow crab butter to set for 10 minutes. Strain butter through a very fine chinois or strainer into a stainless bowl. Place stainless bowl with butter over a large bowl filled with ice water. Whisk butter until it starts to solidify and become firm, but not too tight. Place butter into a food processor with an additional 1/3 pound of butter (cut into small pieces.) Blend crab butter with fresh butter together.

Legend has it that the first true cocktail, the Sazerac, was mixed in New Orleans in the early 19th century by a pharmacist named Antoine Amadee Peychaud. Over the years, the cocktail has taken on many exotic incarnations, the most imaginative of which were concocted here in New Orleans. Famous drinks such as the Absinthe Frappe, the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Obituary Cocktail, the Hurricane, the Hand Grenade and many others owe their beginnings to the imagination and creativity of New Orleans bartenders.

To commemorate this grand tradition, “Tales of the Cocktail” was conceived in 2003 and has rapidly grown into one of the city’s favorite celebrations.Tales of the Cocktail is always held in July at various locations throughout the French Quarter. Some of the city’s best-known mixologists – along with noted bartenders from around the country – can be counted on to shake, stir and pour their colorful concoctions for thousands of grateful and happy guests.

The occasion also features authors on the subject, “Spirited Dinners,” lectures, demonstrations, and all things “cocktail” (luncheons, parties and cocktail hours). Close to two dozen of the leading restaurants from around the city participate in the various events.

Tekrema Dance Theater, under the direction of Greer E. Mendy is holding auditions for its 2008-2009 season. We are seeking artists committed to the mission of Tekrema Center for Art and Culture, interested in learning and performing new choreography, and dedicated to building a strong professional New Orleans based performing company. Company requirements are participation in one class and one rehearsal per week, understanding those two weeks prior to all concerts, rehearsals will occur daily. Dancers shall be paid for all performances. Tekrema Dance Theater will present three major concerts per season.

Southern Rep will host an OPEN CALL for actors Monday, June 9, between 4:00pm—7:30pm. Attending will be local theatre companies and producers including Le Petit Theatre, Jefferson Performing Arts, InSideOut Productions, the NOLA Project, Dem Boys LLC, Le Chat Noir, the Alamo Underground, Anthony Bean Community Theater, Marigny Theatre, Cripple Creek Theatre Company, Actors Theatre of New Orleans, Golden Eagle Theatre Company, Mondo Bizarro, the Shakespeare Festival at Tulane, To Do Productions, and Demeter X Productions. The auditions will take place at Southern Rep's Theatre on the third floor in The Shops at Canal Place.

Auditioners should bring 20 copies of their headshot and résumé, prepare two contrasting monologues of one-minute each, and if musically inclined be prepared to sing 16 bars a cappela. Thousands submitted – Lusher Elementary wins 3 out of 7 in the state – out of 400 state winners 40 designs chosen to be voted on over the Internet this week. The design that receives most votes wins $25,000 for school and $10,000 for the student. Lusher student is one of 40 and will be flown with family to California. Lusher also is one of six schools in the country in a commercial shown nationwide on YouTube and the Doodle4Google site. Old N.O. Rum takes home four awards at international tasting

Celebration Distillation announces its Old New Orleans Rum brands have won several medals at the 3rd Annual Polished Palate International Rum Festival. The Tasting Competition, which took place in Ybor City (Tampa), Florida on March 27 and 28, is the first and only such recognized competition for sugar cane-based spirits in the United States. A panel of spirits industry executives judged nearly 150 rums from internationally recognized brands including Mount Gay, Captain Morgan, Montecristo, Ron Barcelo and Tortuga, and proclaimed all flavors of Old New Orleans Rum as winners.

Judged on aroma, appearance, taste, mouthfeel and finish Old New Orleans Crystal Rum took a gold medal in the white rum category. Old New Orleans Amber Rum won a silver in the category of rums aged up to 8 years, Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum also achieved a silver medal in the spiced rum category, while the newest addition to the Celebration Distillation brand, Old New Orleans 10-Year Old Rum, won a bronze in the rum aged 9 to 15 years category.
"We are extremely proud that all four of our rums were honored at this year's competition," states James Michalopoulos, founder of Celebration Distillation. "It is a testament that perseverance and the search for excellence reap the best rewards, in this case international recognition for our craft."

Arts Council of New Orleans and Americans for the Arts Present A National Arts Marketing Project Double Header

On May 15^th the Arts Council of New Orleans and the Americans for the Arts will present back-to-back Arts Marketing Workshops: Marketing Arts Using New Media from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm followed by Arts Advocacy 101 from 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm.

Greg O'Neill, Account Executive with Patron Technology, a NYC based online marketing company, will cover the top tips for success in the competitive e-marketing race before taking an in-depth look at design and editorial choices that increase “e-effectiveness.”

Jay Dick of the Americans for the Arts will discuss the importance of an effective arts advocacy program and the best strategies for communicating with elected officials to insulate arts programs from budget cuts.

These workshops are part of a series of dynamic, intensive full-day workshops to be offered to our local Arts Community over the next six months. The Arts Council, in collaboration with the Americans for the Arts are bringing the ground breaking National Arts Marketing Project (NAMP) to New Orleans to address the short and long-term marketing and audience development needs of our local arts organizations. This program builds upon NAMP’s ten-year record of success in helping arts organizations throughout the country to better understand the marketplace in which they operate; to create aggressive audience development programs to suit those markets and produce increased earned revenue; and to develop professional marketing expertise within the organizations that will help them be more sustainable.

A fee of $30 for Arts Council Members and $40 for non Members covers both workshops’ printed materials, continental breakfast and lunch.

Following the entire workshop series, twenty participants will be eligible to apply for scholarships to attend the 2008 Americans for the Arts National Arts Marketing Conference in Houston, TX. Local arts organizations interested in receiving these scholarships are required to participate in the workshop series.

Crimes Against Nature is a new and original musical by the troupe that brought you the notorious Palanquin Diaries. Crimes is a bizarre and twisted romantic comedy featuring a co-dependant dysfunctional relationship between Happy and Gaye Daye, who happen to be cousins (and they know it) as well as clowns (and they don’t know it.) The situation goes from bad to worse, and even worse, and then surprise! Roller Skates...then worse still… Not to worry, all romantic comedies have a happy ending! The show features animation by Thomas Little and Lisa vanWambeck and an original score by Ratty Scurvics.

New Orleans, LA (March 13, 2008) 3 New Orleans painters are launching a tour that will bring visions of the Crescent City to the nation’s capitol in this election year. Bedonna Wakeman, Eric Buchanan and Veronica Leandrez will premiere their touring art exhibit, named “New Orleans: Spirit a’ Risen”, on Friday, April 4th from 6 to 9 pm at Ray’s “Neutral Ground” VIP Art Lounge, at 508 Frenchmen Street, upstairs of Ray’s Boom Boom Room. Musical guests for the “New Orleans: Spirit a’ Risen” opening will include Doc Otis and The Junker Jazz All Stars with a special appearance by vocalist Jane Harvey Brown.

The event will be held in a ground breaking new art venue. Owner of The “Neutral Ground” VIP Art Lounge, Ray Holmes has opened the upstairs rooms of the Boom Boom Room to be “a place for all to come together on neutral ground- as equals- to enjoy the culture, food and music of New Orleans under one roof.”

“I’m honored to be a representative of New Orleans visual art in Washington DC during such a memorable time in our country’s political history, and to be premiering this exhibit on Frenchmen Street” said Veronica Leandrez, “after all, this is the hot spot for music so why shouldn’t it be a hot spot for art? And what a great venue!”

The show will close at Ray’s “Neutral Ground” VIP Art Lounge on April 28th and get on the road, stopping in Chattanooga, Tennessee before making its way to our nation’s capitol to be displayed at The Artful Gallery, 1349 Maryland Ave NE Washington DC from June 6th through the 27th.

Bedonna Wakeman is known for her portraits of Jazz icons. She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums nationally and abroad. You can find her work on the fence on Pirate’s Alley on weekends through the Fall and Spring seasons. Eric Buchanan studied art at the University of North Carolina. He has been a painter in New Orleans for over 16 years and you can find him and his work on Jackson Square. Veronica Leandrez was named a local emerging artist to be on the watch for by Eric Bookhart last year and was selected as one of the local artists who participated in the “Fleur de Lis” Sculpture Competition sponsored by The Arts Council of New Orleans last spring.

"Chocolate, Chocolate, & More Chocolate" was the decadent scene at Generations Hall for the Annual WYES-TV Channel 12 Chocolate Sunday fundraiser on February 10, 2008. Vendors from all over including New Orleans Ice Cream, Wolfe's, Muriel's, The Melting Pot, Blue Frog Chocolates and many others participated in this heavenly event. Many drinks including fine liquors, champagne and wines from Republic and Glazer were sampled at this event. Some interesting twists on this culinary favorite included a "healthy" chocolate being marketed specifically to women along with "male chocolate" and "female chocolate," each having specific characteristics and flavors that sexes voted on. The event was a huge success, with many patrons getting their dose of chocolate even before Valentine's Day this year.

The Arts Council of New Orleans has announced its 2008 Community Arts Award Recipients. “These individuals and organizations are being recognized for their unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions to the arts in New Orleans over many years,” said Mary Len Costa, Interim President of the Arts Council of New Orleans.”

Award Recipients include:Musician Terence Blanchard, actor and writer Ricky Graham, musician Donald Harrison Jr., artist Gene Koss, arts patron Mrs. Paula Maher, and The Historic New Orleans Collection.

Ms. Costa added, “It’s time to celebrate the creative spirit – the heartbeat of New Orleans. We invite everyone to join us for this year’s luncheon as we honor those who share their talents and creativity with our city and the world beyond our borders.”

Due to stormy weather the Krewe of Muses has rescheduled for Friday (2/1) at 8 p.m., and the Knights of Babylon will roll Sunday (2/3) at 11 a.m. The Knights of Chaos has decided not to parade because of schedule conflicts with other Krewe events.
